First step in Africa. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. A capital city where half of the streets are made of orange ground, where kids play with car tires, where women hairstyles are mountains of bananas and carotts, where we drink the Brakina, the local brewed ale, to support the daily 43 degrees of April, where each life event is a feast, and especially, where the most beautiful smiles have crossed my way on this past year and a half trip.…

Beauty treasure and « buena onda », Columbia is among the crushes of my trips. I keep in mind two amazing cities : Cartagena de Indias and Bogota, capital city of the country. Cartagena is the diamond of the Caribbean coast, known as the most beautiful colonial city of the country, where every front wall looks like a masterpiece painting. And Bogota, it’s the huge capital city, surrounded by the mountains, also concealing, architectural treasures and great art museums. It seethes with…

Peru, it’s…huge. I only visited the south half of the country but it felt very, very, very big. Travelling here is getting used to spending 18 hours in a doubtful suspension-less bus on the tight road of the Andes Cordillera. It’s also getting used to trembling with fear every time another bus crosses your path in the turns, sitting by a small lady, crossing herself, every time the worst was avoided… But not only that !! It’s most of all, get…

There nothing better than a few lines, written on the warm fly during the nights under the net with my headlight…: « This very evening, in the dying afternoon, the sun was still shining. I went to Norma’s from the house of Rocca. The children were playing volleyball with their Father, the dog was feeding its puppy Inder the wooden stairs of the house. Norma was picking yukas for our diner. Then the girls taught me how to make bracelets. In…

GUATEMALA, panorama

Guatemala is a country of water and earth, lakes and volcanos. It’s a place where villages are hidden in the mountains above clouds and fog. It’s the small but extraordinary village of Livingston where the African and Caribbean cultures come together. It’s the huge markets that cover the streets with fruits and vegetables. It’s the multicolored roads of the cities where huge trucks decorated with flames and lightning signs busily drive around. It’s the Mayan culture, still as vivid today…

Xela is the second largest city in Guatemala. “Xela” or “Xelaju’noj” is its Mayan indigenous name and it means “at the feet of 10 mountains”. The city is better known by its colonial name, Quetzaltenango, which means “the nest of Quetzal”, the emblematic bird of Guatemala. The city, where the locals are mainly indigenous people, is surrounded by mountains and volcanos and perched at more than 2000m above sea level. The first time I arrived in Xela, I wondered where…

I was very curious to see the neighbors of Guatemala. Not having more than just a few days, I chose the city of San Cristobal de las Casas and its nearby area, a few hours away from the border. Although it seemed more in order, the city offered a blast of life and colors, similar to what I had known in Guatemala. Churches dominated the cityscape, paper garlands filled the sky with little colored dots, markets were packed with visitors.…

MANINGRIDA, panorama

I already talked about the artistic affluence of Maningrida through its art gallery and Babbarra Women Center. But the community itself is worth taking time to discover. Maningrida is installed on the coast of Arafura sea at the top north of Australia. When I was there, it was impossible to reach the place except by flying, roads being cut off because of the rain. I loved the spectacular things that occurred every single day here : elegant women with colored…

MELBOURNE, panorama

Melbourne is another delicious sight. Colors are everywhere – on the people, on the crazy buildings in the city centre, but above all in the superb wall paintings on the façades of the city. It’s difficult not to stop every few meters when you’re walking in this city. The following pictures are only very brief overviews of the wonders we may encounter during our visit there ! …
