It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Maningrida. Deborah, my neighbor and friend from across the corridor (without whom my stay in Maningrida would not have been as incredible), asked me if I would like to spend an afternoon with two of her friends, Joyce and Laura. It was in the city of Rotorua, amid the smoking valleys of Te Puia that are located the famous national schools of weaving and wood carving of New Zealand. These schools were created in order to preserve traditional Maori art. I met Cathy at the Rotorua museum during an exhibition dedicated to weaving. She was presenting one of her works, a shawl or “Tarapouahi” as it would be called in Maori, made of flax and feathers. Cathy started weaving in the traditional maori way 14 years ago. Her husband, Jim, works in the restoration of marae.
